We know physical fitness can help alleviate symptoms of depression, but a new study suggests that exercise may prevent them from happening in the first place.
Researchers surveyed nearly 3,000 women between ages 42 to 52 to assess their fitness levels as well as their depression symptoms. They found that women who met the standard public health recommendations for physical activity showed fewer signs of depression, when compared to inactive women. And the more physical activity a woman logged, the less likely she was to have depression symptoms, suggesting that moderate-intensity levels of exercise may be protective against the mental illness.
While there's no one-size-fits all prevention or treatment for depression, the findings are particularly noteworthy for individuals in midlife. According to a 2014 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report, middle-age women have the highest rate of depression than any other age group in the United States. This could partly be due to the fact that many people don't seek treatment for the illness -- according to the CDC report, only 35 percent of people with severe depression saw a mental health professional within the last year.
The new research adds to the seemingly endless emotional health benefits of exercise, including improved cognitive functioning, controlled addiction and lower stress and anxiety. Even just a few moments of walking in nature can have mood-boosting powers.
The results were published in the February 2015 issue of the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise.

PLUTO — Now is your chance to help name part of Pluto and its companion Charon.

As the New Horizons spacecraft approaches Pluto for its first flyby, NASA is asking for help to name the dwarf planet’s features. Anyone can vote for their favorite names — or even nominate different ones — online until midnight Friday.

“This campaign not only reveals the public's excitement about the mission, but helps the team, which will not have time to come up with names during the flyby, to have a ready-made library of names in advance to officially submit to the International Astronomical Union,” NASA planetary Science Division director Jim Green said in a statement.

The July 14 encounter will be the first flyby of the dwarf planet and its satellites, meaning scientists will be able to see Pluto in greater detail than ever before.

NASA is partnering with the International Astronomical Union, which is responsible for naming celestial bodies, for the campaign. The IAU will determine how names recommended by NASA are used.

There were more than 40,000 submissions as of April 7, according to New Horizons science team member Mark Showalter. Online name ballots are broken down into the categories of history of exploration, literature of exploration and mythology of the underworld.

Names on the ballots range from real-life explorers like Leif Erikson to the fictional Indiana Jones and Flash Gordon. The underworld ballot features names from international mythology.

Nominations that are approved will be added to the online ballots, according to NASA.

Like stars that can be ejected from galaxies, resigned to an eternity floating through the darkness of intergalactic space, astronomers have discoveredentire galaxies — 11 in total — that underwent some unpleasant gravitational turbulence and flung from their home clusters, marooned in interclusterspace.

“These galaxies are facing a lonely future, exiled from the galaxy clusters they used to live in,” said Igor Chilingarian, an astronomer at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and Moscow State University.

Runaway stars can be ejected from their host galaxies if they are travelling at a greater speed than that galaxy’s “escape velocity.” Like a rocket leaving Earth’s gravitational well, escape velocity can only be achieved if the rocket is supplied with enough energy to exceed 11.2 kilometers per second (25,000 miles per hour). In the case of a star being ejected from our galaxy, it would need to be traveling a speed of 537 km/s (over 1.2 million miles per hour!).

So you can probably imagine the astronomical speed an entire galaxy would need to travel to leave the gravitational heft of an entire galaxy cluster — a velocity of up to 3,000 km/s (6 million miles per hour), depending on the mass of the cluster.

The 11 runaway galaxies were found by chance while Chilingarian and co-investigator Ivan Zolotukhin, of the L’Institut de Recherche en Astrophysique et Planetologie and Moscow State University, were scouring publicly-available data (via the Virtual Observatory) from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the GALEX satellite for compact elliptical galaxies.

These tiny galaxies are rare, but the researchers were able to uncover 200 previously unknown compact ellipticals, 11 of which were found to be alone and separated from any galactic cluster. And they are moving really, really fast.
“The first compact ellipticals were all found in clusters because that’s where people were looking. We broadened our search, and found the unexpected,” said Zolotukhin. Elliptical galaxies are thought to originate from larger galaxies that go through gravitational interactions with neighboring galaxies; ellipticals are therefore expected to be clustered near larger ‘parent’ galaxies.

So how did these tiny galaxies, which are approximately 1,000 times smaller than our galaxy, end up so far away from home?
The researchers think that a similar gravitational mechanism that produces runaway stars may be also slingshotting these ellipticals.
“We asked ourselves, what else could explain them? The answer was a classic three-body interaction,” said Chilingarian.

One way a hypervelocity star can be produced is if one star in a binary pair strays too close to a black hole. When the star gets swallowed, its binary partner is flung away. In the case of a hypervelocity compact elliptical galaxy, should a massive galaxy collide with the elliptical’s parent galaxy, the elliptical could be flung away as the two larger galaxies merge.

For the compact elliptical galaxy, this galactic merger is the start of its long and, potentially, infinite journey into the cosmic abyss.

Ascension Earth 2012

Farewell from Ascension Earth!

I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to each and every one of you for visiting Ascension Earth over the past few years and making this site, what I consider, such a wonderful and very surprising success since my first post way back in January of 2011. I never dreamed this site would receive just shy of 10 million page views since then, and I want to thank you all again for stopping in from time to time for a visit. I hope you have found some of the content interesting as well as educational, and I want everyone to know that I only shared content I believed to be factual at the time of publication, though I may have reached differing understandingsconcerning some of the subject matter as time has past. All of the content that has been shared here at Ascension Earth was shared with the goal of provoking contemplation and conversation, leading to a raising of consciousness, an ascension of consciousness. That's what ascension is to me.

I have made a decision to move on from here, but I will always remember and always cherish the friendships I have made along this twisting journey since launching this site, what feels like a lifetime ago now. I wish all of you the greatest success in each and every endeavor you shall undertake, and I hope each of you are graced with peace, love & light every step of the way as you continue your never ending journey through this incredibly breathtaking and ever mysterious universe we share together.

Conversation with
A Man Who Went to Mars
by Morgan Kochel

…And there you have it! This was the end of our discussion about the Mars mission, but I have remained in touch with Chad. At this point, I hope to be able to convince him to do a video or TV interview, but of course, there will be more than a few obstacles to overcome, the main one being that he may currently be in some danger if he goes public.

Furthermore, there is always the barrier of peoples' understandable skepticism.

As I said in the beginning, I cannot verify this story for anyone, nor is my intent to convince anyone of its veracity. My goal is only to help him get his story heard, because if this story IS true, the people of this planet are being lied to on a grand scale, and perhaps this will eventually help the UFO Disclosure Movement. It's time for the lies to be uncovered, and time for the truth -- whatever that may be -- to be known once and for all.
